Steve Smith e Penny Coventry, entrambi MVP SharePoint ed MCT di Combined Knowledge, hanno scritto un buon whitepaper che illusta come migrare un ambiente SharePoint 2007 da sistemi Windows Server 2003 a 32bits verso sistemi Windows Server 2008 a 64 bits.
Sono diversi i vantaggi che potrebbero suggerire il passaggio al nuovo sistema operativo:
- IIS 7.0 - Better performance and management of Web Services
- Powershell command line scripting
- Better Security Management built into the OS
- Virtualization with Hyper V
- Performance improvements in the TCP/IP stack
- Improved Monitoring tools and wizards.
I due autori sottolineano in una nota che è sì possibile implementare SharePoint Farm "miste" con sistemi a 32 e 64 bits, ma che è altrettando suggerito di evitare di "mischiare" server con architettura differente per lo stesso ruolo (come del resto scritto anche sulla KB).
